                How To Get Involved                                                              
              Placer County Peer Court welcomes volunteers to participate in all aspects of the
              program. Positions include adult mentor attorneys, teen attorneys, teen jury
              members, teen tobacco and truancy court panelists, teen clerks and bailiffs,
             and Peer Court office interns. See below for more information about specific roles.
    
 
     Adult Mentor Attorneys
     Mentor attorneys assist teen attorneys in the preparation and presentation of cases. Mentor attorneys are present at
     court hearings to counsel the teen attorneys. Attorneys who volunteer come from a wide range of law expertise.

     Teen Attorneys
     Students are trained to prepare and try real juvenile cases in Peer Court. Certified Teen Attorneys are trained in courtroom
     procedure and etiquette, reading police reports, delivering opening statements and closing arguments, questioning witnesses,
     and using evidence, among other things.

      Jurors
     Peer Court jurors hear cases and determine the requirements a defendant is to fulfill for the crime they have committed.
     Jurors are shown a short training video at court before hearing the case.
 
      If you would like to sit as a juror you need to sign up in advance. Read the following statement for information about 
      signing up:

                            All jurors must sign up prior to court. Pre-signed up jurors will be called outside the courthouse at 5:45pm.

                            Sign up to sit as a juror by calling 916-663-9227 ext. 7#
                            Please be aware: late jurors may loose their seat to another student.
 
 
     Tobacco and Truancy Panelists
     Special panels hear Tobacco and Truancy violations. Panels are made up of 3-5 students who have previous experience
     with such issues or have been trained in hearing Tobacco and Truancy citations.

     Clerks and Bailiff
     Clerks assist the court by keeping record of all present jurors, administer oaths to all jurors and witnesses, manage 
     evidence, and read the decision of the jury.
 
     Bailiffs maintain order in the court, enforce courtroom rules, and take charge of the jury. 
 
     No training is required for Clerks and Bailiffs.

     Office Interns

     Internships with our office are available for college students.  Priority will be given to those majoring in Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice, or Social Work, or those preparing for a career in the legal field, law enforcement, or to work with at-risk youth.  We will also accept applicants working towards a Business Administrative degree or certificate.  The intern will assist in the pre court preparation and post court follow up, and are encouraged to assist in as many court nights as possible based.
